I had a health scare that made me realize turning 50 and living an unhealthy lifestyle was a recipe for trouble on the back nine of my life. I decided a personal trainer would give me not only fitness guidance and help to reach my goal of living and being more healthy, but also give me some accountability to help stay on the path I had chosen. I specifically chose Ascend Fitness because I had met Tanya through Rotary and I liked her values and trusted her.
I joined Ascend Fitness in September of 2012 and the results were fairly quick as I dropped 10 lbs and legitimately felt better and more energized. When I returned from my Christmas 2012 UK trip to visit family there I realized that the fitness component had reached a stalemate and I needed to address nutrition as well as fitness if I wanted to be successful with my overall health goals. I joined the Take Down challenge and dropped 21 pounds and 2 ½” off my waist in 4 weeks!!!
Since starting with Ascend Fitness I feel much better, I started running (Sun Run here I come!), eating 4 balanced meals a day rather than 2 not so balanced, and can see the results mount quickly both mentally and physically.
"I’ve made some great friends at Boot Camp and so has my daughter."
I first heard about Ascend Fitness’ Stroller Boot Camp when I was doing my daily walks along the Vedder as a very overdue pregnant woman wanting to get this baby out. I would see Tanja running or biking, and she told me about these great classes that she puts on. I immediately loved the idea!
I’m a physician here in Chilliwack and have always felt a little hypocritical when counseling my patients to be more active. Going through med-school, residency and then working like crazy throughout my pregnancy didn’t leave a lot of time for fitness … or that was my excuse at least.
So when I started Stroller Boot Camp at 6 weeks postpartum it was a wake-up call! My legs were so sore for the first month I remember having trouble carrying my 10 pound daughter up our stairs! As a new mom, I was definitely not bored, but I was a little isolated for those first few weeks. Stroller Boot Camp was the first scheduled event I made it to with my newborn and was my first routine interaction with other new moms. It felt great! We push each other to go faster each session (sometimes using our children to cheer each other on!) And congratulate each other when we accomplish goals. I’ve made some great friends at Boot Camp and so has my daughter. They shared in her milestones (like her first steps and her first birthday), and we get to share in theirs (including new pregnancies and second babies now!) I’ve lost all of my baby weight and more, and am now more fit and active than I have ever been and it’s because I found a form of exercise that I really look forward to.
I like Boot Camp so much that I actually planned my work schedule around it. It gives me extra time with my daughter and keeps me healthy, social and happy. Plus I don’t feel so hypocritical anymore counseling my patients on fitness. I know how hard it is to get started, but you can’t imagine how amazing it feels once you do!
"But what I have lost is NOTHING compared to what I have gained!"
When I was asked if I would write a testimonial, “since you have been successful with boot camp”, it caught me by surprise. Me? I have been successful with boot camp? But now that I stop and think about it, I guess I have to agree.
I had always wanted to go to “Boot Camp”, but always thought – “Not me, I could never do that”. It was WAY too early in the morning, I would never be able to keep up with everyone, etc., etc. The excuses were many and some much more creative than others. I grew up a book worm, way too self-conscious to enjoy physical activities. I dreaded P.E. class growing up. (Kids can be so cruel to each other.)
I had gone to Tanja’s website many times, but always froze before hitting that last button and committing. In August 2011, with my wedding less than a year away, I was slipping back into old habits after making great progress doing hot yoga and eating a raw food diet. But life got complicated and things began to slide. It is always a vicious circle, and one I’m sure many of us have gone through many times.
This time, I decided to hit “SEND” before I could chicken out again. I’m still not sure where I found the nerve to get up the next morning and just “show up” at the park, where all the people there knew each other and could easily see how out of shape I was. (Oh, the mind can be a terrible thing!) In any case, I was very self conscious, but at the same time I knew I needed to do this. And not only needed to – I WANTED to! And I wanted to surprise my fiancé, who had been working out of town for most of the summer. We have started and stopped many times trying to work fitness into our busy lives, but never seemed to be able to maintain it for any length of time.
It felt great to actually push myself a little bit. The changes were slow and fast at the same time. I actually gained a few pounds in those first few weeks. (Well, muscle weighs more than fat, right?) But I felt stronger, and my frame of mind was better. I kept it up until a short trip at the end of November, and then began another slide, right through Christmas. The difference this time? I knew I was going back to boot camp, because I was truly starting to enjoy it. Plus our July wedding was looming ever closer!
And back I went, the first week of January 2012. And I kept going. Again, with not too much success on the scale, only 5 pounds in 3 months, but at least I wasn’t going up any more. A trip to England in April, and I managed to lose another 2 pounds while we were away! (I ignored my inner voice telling me I had lost muscle, not fat.)
So when did I reach the point where I was “Successful”? The turning point happened on May 4, 2012. While doing our cool down exercises, Tanja was discussing how important it is to track what you are putting into your body, alongside the fitness component. (Blah, blah, blah, we all know this, right?) But then she told us about an app called “My Fitness Pal”. So I went home and set up an account. I have been using it ever since. So now it is 4 months later, and I have lost about 21 pounds since I took Tanja’s advice. What an education it has been. Now I check the calories and content of things BEFORE I eat them, and then decide whether to have them or not.
But what I have lost is NOTHING compared to what I have gained! I have truly passed the point where exercise is a chore and a necessary evil. In addition to boot camp, I am running 2 to 3 times a week. Whereas before, a 6km run was cause for a big celebration, 6km is now my minimum when I go for a run.
I am confident; I feel GOOD about myself; I feel a great sense of accomplishment; I am back into the smallest sizes of clothing in my closet! It is very interesting to note that those things I am now wearing again, I wore when I was actually about 10 pounds lighter than I am now. So my shape and composition has definitely changed. I have muscles, and I love how I can feel them working when I am walking, exercising, or just stretching. And these changes project outwards, which I hope has a positive effect on those around me. I am excited to see what each day holds. I can do ANYTHING! And when I walked down that aisle on July 28th, I was walking towards what I know is going to be the healthiest, happiest and most exciting stage of my life
The camaraderie and support the boot campers give to each other is amazing – I couldn’t have done it without them. I have made friends and found a great running buddy. The workouts are always challenging and different – there is no way you are going to get bored! That early morning hour is all for me, 60 minutes that I take all for myself. I deserve it. We all deserve it. And I owe it to myself to give the 110% that Tanja asks for, because at the end of the day I am only fooling myself if I don’t put in the effort.
I have been transformed, and I have Ascend Fitness, and Tanja Shaw, to thank for it. It changed my life.
" I was able rehabilitate much faster than expected"
As a client of Ascend Fitness for the last two years, I have participated in the Takedown Challenge, the Tough Mudder training, and personal training twice a week as well as an occasional Boot Camp. However, when I sustained a serious back injury during the Muck MS race in early October, I felt crippled by the pain and immobility. Thanks to the great trainers at Ascend Fitness, specifically Gord, who was able to adapt my exercise program and I was able rehabilitate much faster than expected. The Ascend team has been great for my overall health, but made an enormous difference when I was injured.
"I have become the most fit I’ve ever been in my life"
I had lost a bunch of weight already through Weight Watchers, and was looking for somebody to help release more fat and improve my fitness.
Since joining, I have become the most fit I’ve ever been in my life. I’ve become an inspiration for others. I’ve added a lot more muscle and removed more fat. There have been massive improvements in fitness test results. I have a lot more energy and lower stress considering everything going on with my businesses and family. I do have a ways to go to meet the new goals I’ve set for myself after reaching my initial goals – every day is a new challenge!
If you’re sitting on the fence – get off now and join! You have nothing to lose. It costs a bit of money but cheaper then a heart attack or many other consequences of not being active. The spinoff benefits of being more productive and healthy will pay it back.
The end of August marks our three-month anniversary with Ascend Fitness, and what a terrific three months it has been! We finally took the advice of our friend, Brian Wierks, and on the heels of a visit by Tanja to our Rotary Club, we decided to take the initiative and “get fit”. (As Brian said when he saw us at the gym “ finally ran out of excuses, eh?”)
From the initial consult with Tanja, to the nutritional consult with Sharon Fast, and especially our sessions with our trainer, Gordon Penner, the folks at Ascend have been friendly, respectful and professional. Neither of us are “gym people”, so embarking on this journey was bit awkward; we were quite self-conscious and a bit embarrassed (particularly after our initial fitness evaluation).
But three months later, we’re still really enjoying the experience, and are convinced that we have found something that will become a permanent and significant part of our lives.
The training sessions are varied, interesting, challenging, obviously thoughtfully prepared to meet our fitness objectives, and kinda fun. And the “accountability” aspect ensures that we exercise some discipline. Left to workout on our own, I know the results would not be anywhere near as good.
Gord is a pleasure to work with. We’re not kids, and we’re not looking to run marathons. But he seems genuinely interested in helping us meet our goals of overall improved fitness, and is very attentive to ensure that we stay pain and injury free, while working hard at the same time. He even took the time and effort to draw up a work-out plan that we followed every day on a recent trip to Las Vegas.
Orla’s blood pressure has improved significantly, which was her main objective. Rob has lost about 24 lbs and lowered his blood pressure significantly. Being diabetic, management of that was his most important objective. Right from the first month on, he has seen a dramatic decrease in his blood sugar levels. Rob’s A1C test results have gone from 7.9 in April (prior to joining Ascend) to 7.2 in June and in September after just three and a half months of training down to 6.5. This is the lowest his numbers have been since testing began four and half years ago. Full credit to Gord and Ascend!! We both sleep better and have more energy, and Rob’s snoring has “almost” disappeared. And while we are both pretty conscious of a healthy diet, neither of us want to feel starved or deprived in the process.
We’re normally very reluctant to refer people to someone without being absolutely confident in the quality of the service. But we have referred people to Ascend Fitness, on an absolutely unqualified basis, and are pleased to hear that the feedback is positive. Many of our friends are now members and all are very pleased with their decision to join.
To someone sitting on the fence about joining Ascend Fitness, we’d say, much like Brian said to us, “stop making excuses to yourself”, check your self-consciousness at the door, and just do it. You absolutely will not regret it. Pay attention to the nutritional aspects of the training as much as to the physical aspects if you want to get the desired results. But you will get the desired results, if you work at it and are honest with yourself.
Thank you so much for the inspiration and support you have given me. One thinks that as one gets older they should be wise and content. But to me, numbers mean nothing and wisdom, I am still working on it. I love a challenge. You have given me the tools to feel great, control my blood sugar and know that at 67 I am still accepted and welcome. Anything is possible.
“When I started in on a fitness program with Ascend, I have to admit I wasn’t 100% certain of all the outcomes I wanted. My goal was to strengthen upper body and especially my core somewhat, and hopefully that would improve my running. Fourteen months later I can attest there have been multiple positive outcomes: by following the “Eating with a Purpose” guideline I recognize I have a healthier, more purposeful intake with meals through the week. The big plus was addressing the almost constant mid-afternoon energy crashes I used to have. Resolving that alone makes enrolling in a program at Ascend worthwhile. But I have also now lost about 18 pounds and inches around the waist. They were not major goals when I set out, but terrific side benefits! And the core strength has definitely increased. The improvements in my running have been steady and pleasantly surprising. These have resulted in completing the 2014 BMO Vancouver Marathon with a personal best time; and my most recent half (Vancouver Rock’n’Roll Half) was my best half marathon time in some seven years. Thanks Ascend!
"I have improved my core and upper body strength, and can see my abs now."
I joined Ascend in 2013 to improve my overall strength and improve my running performance, after having completed my first marathon. I had developed good running endurance, but neglected my core and upper body strength. I was impressed with how fun and interesting the boot camp workouts were and how they challenged me in different ways than my running training. I have lost about 5 pounds, but significantly improved my core and upper body strength. I often sit for long periods at work and used to get lower back pain. With improved core strength, I do not have any back pain anymore. Increased upper body strength has improved my abilities at work as well. I find that heavy lifting much easier and safer now. I have even noticed a big difference in running performance: I increased my running pace and I am stronger and feel better I really enjoy boot camp sessions because of the friendly and knowledgeable coaches. They always take time to give encouragement, pointers or tips to each of us at every boot camp. I notice that they always make an effort to make new clients feel welcome. I would recommend Ascend for anyone. Improved strength is important for people who regularly engage in physical activity in order to make movements and lifting easier and safer. It is even more important for those who are not physically active to begin building a base of strength and becoming more active. The friendly staff and organized facility is great. Most other gyms I have been to have a very cold and impersonal atmosphere; whereas I find that the members at Ascend tend to encourage each other and make a bit more of a personal connection. I think that the scheduled sessions keep you accountable to meet with the coach and a group. The members at Ascend are also very friendly and welcoming. At every boot camp, people will be chatting and encouraging each other during the exercises. I am very glad that I have joined Ascend, and I am well motivated to keep going and developing in the future.
I first joined Ascend Fitness November 2013 I think. I was always active and exercising but a constant tiredness, hip injuries, not feeling well, not feeling strong and fit, and just an overall feeling of “blah” were plaguing me for months, especially after a pressure filled year or two. I knew Tanja Shaw personally and wanted to give boot camp a try as I always loved boot camp exercises! It is just my thing! I loved it from the moment I joined, that was after the first few weeks of recovery from sore muscles. Within a few months I felt stronger, my fitness level climbed and I was hooked! The trainers are awesome, love the atmosphere, love working out with others who care. My hip injuries disappeared as well! Although I felt stronger and fitter, I struggled to drop a couple of pounds and my body did not seem to look like I was feeling. That was until I did the Take Down Challenge. The exercise combined with changing my eating habits (portion control and more protein), had an amazing result for me. I have lots of energy, it took my exercise to a different level and I am feeling very blessed to be able to this what I can do. Of course I will recommend Ascend Fitness. I am a walking talking example of how making some changes in exercise and eating can have wonderful results. Thank you to all of you at Ascend Fitness who help to make this place so special!
"I have lost about 12 pounds and feel strong for the first time in my life"
I first joined Ascend because I was tired of trying to get fit on my own. I had had small successes on my own, but knew deep down that I needed to make fitness a priority in my life, for the first time. I had NO sports background and was never a runner. My history of exercise consisted of walking and the occasional Jillian Michaels DVD. When I finally took the plunge and went to my first boot camp, I was pretty nervous – I felt like everyone was going to be staring at the “newbie” who had no idea how to do a push-up and had never heard of a plank. I was thrilled to be proven wrong (everyone was too exhausted from the awesome workout to notice the gym nerd) and instantly hooked – I signed up for the year and never looked back. I found the coaches to be amazingly helpful, and fun to be around. I’m realizing the importance of being pushed to do more – all it takes is a challenge (real or perceived) from one of the coaches. The other boot-campers I’ve met make boot camp fun and add a social aspect to working out that I never expected. Throughout the year, I gained confidence. For the first few months, I would notice the “keeners” and wish I was fit like them. Then I started to notice that I was able to keep up with them. This was a huge boost to my self-confidence, and has shown up in other areas of my life as well. Physically, I have lost about 12 pounds and feel strong for the first time in my life. I no longer get sore shins when I run. My advice for anyone thinking of joining? Do it! You won’t regret it. There are days that boot camp is not at the top of the list of things I want to do that day, but I ALWAYS leave happy. I have never had a boot camp I didn’t enjoy. The coaches are fantastic and want you to succeed. Your fellow boot-campers are there to cheer you on. Its addictive.
Chantay has five kiddos, and runs two businesses. Despite being busy, Chantay has participated in two TakeDown Challenges, and trains at Ascend Fitness two mornings per week. When she started with Ascend Fitness just a few months ago she was 173 pounds. At her weigh in last week she was 149. Congratulations Chantay!
I've been able to maintain a healthy weight for over a year!
I joined Ascend Fitness to make good on a promise I made to myself before turning 40—to give myself the gift of health. I had been struggling with obesity for years when I finally reached a point where I was tired of the pain and lack of energy. I wanted my forties to be different. No, I needed my forties to be different. When I turned 40, I adopted a loveable, albeit energetic, dog who needed a lot of exercise. I lost my first 25 pounds with my new adorably fluffy walking partner. Once my energy and fitness improved a little, I started training for the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon. I trained for this for six months and completed the race in two hours and ten minutes, after having lost an additional 15 pounds. It was at this point on my journey that I turned to Ascend Fitness. I wanted to continue to challenge myself along my trajectory towards health. Bootcamp style workouts that focused on cardio and resistance training seemed like a good way to do this. I found the coaching staff to be very helpful and inspiring. I really appreciated the emphasis they placed on healthy nutrition. I also found the coaching very instructive with regard to good form and technique with the exercises. Although my first workouts were challenging, I found that I thrived on the positive energy and sense of camaraderie among the other athletes. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with Ascend Fitness. First, I’m proud that I’ve been able to lose an additional 40 pounds. I’m now in the healthy weight range category for my height. And I’ve managed to maintain my healthy weight for over a year, something I’ve always struggled with in the past. Second, I’m proud of the overall improvements to my fitness. After one year of Ascend Fitness workouts, I ran the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon 30 minutes faster than the previous year. I’m looking forward to training for my next fitness challenge: an 8-day supported tour on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in August 2015. The route will follow the Continental Divide, roughly 700 km up and over the Rocky Mountains, along remote forest service roads and single track trail. It’s time to put all those squats and lunges to work! If you’re thinking about giving Ascend Fitness a try, please do. You won’t regret the decision. It’ll be a wonderful investment in your health and wellbeing. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
I joined Ascend because I had come to a point in my life when I knew it was time to take care of health. Our family had been dealing with some very stressful events and I believed that if I was physically stronger I could then emotionally face any challenges that lay ahead. My work outs are a stress relief for me. They are challenging but I really look forward to them, I can feel and see improvements each month. Since joining Ascend I have participated in the Unbridled Mud Trials (something I would never have done before!), I have achieved weight loss goals, and I started the new year participating in the Resolution Run where I met my goal to run the entire 5km. I have learned how to eat healthier by taking part in grocery store tours and participating in a Takedown Challenge. Ascend is not just a gym, it is a community. It is a place where anyone of any age or fitness level can feel comfortable and more importantly they can be successful in reaching their personal fitness goals.
"I wanted to get back into shape after having twins"
I first joined Ascend to get back into shape after my third and fourth child (twins!). I find it a consistent way to do strength training because it’s fun, only an hour, and there are plenty of time options available. I also like that I don’t have to think about it – I just show up, and know in 1 hour I’ll get a well-rounded work-out. It’s helped make me a faster runner by strengthening my legs and core, and I don’t find I get sore after running like I used to.
At first I joined Ascend wanting to lose weight. And after I accomplished that, I came just because I enjoy the workouts! Now I’m more interested in toning muscles while having constant encouragement as I continue. I started out hardly being able to run, and using the lightest weights possible. Now I have tripled my strength in weights, I can consider myself a “faster” runner, and I actually enjoy coming to my workouts!
"The timing was right, and I know that I am the only one who can make a change"
Ascend Fitness consists of a very professional and welcoming team. The program is set up for success, but, of course, it depends on each individual. I met Tanja Shaw and immediately noticed her passion for her business and her belief that every client is able to improve his/her lifestyle. After trying offers from various local fitness companies, it was an easy decision to give Ascend Fitness a go. The timing was right since I wanted to set an example for my grandchildren, and I was ready to lose a few pounds and inches which I don’t intend to find again! Not only have I lost weight at 1 pound a week (even with my daily glass of wine), but I also sleep better and thus feel more energized throughout the day. I attribute my success to:
the dedication of the entire Ascend Fitness team;
the scheduling of the fitness sessions, since I am able to determine and book on-line (2 x 30 min per week in a small group of no more than 4 participants);
receiving valuable lifestyle information (nutrition guidelines, etc) and implementing that education into my schedule; and
my attitude and mindset. The timing was right, and I know that I am the only one who can make a change – with a little “kick butt” from the A-Team
Since joining Ascend Fitness, I have realized that it is a lifestyle change, I am not on a diet or go to my fitness sessions to lose weight! And – to top it off, it has improved my look from the inside out! Of course, a spa visit once in a while won’t hurt either :)
I went in to talk with Tanja at Ascend when I heard about a 28 day challenge and I was frustrated with my weight and not able to lose even though I was walking / running etc. I saw results after the 28 day challenge and now 2 years later, I feel great, and have lost weight, inches and dropped from a 12-14 to a size 8 in most things! I love the variety of the boot camp session, and enjoy the social time with the other members!
When I joined Ascend Fitness in February 2015, I was faced with the overwhelming task of getting my life and health in order and making myself a priority. Not knowing where to begin, I sought the help of Ascend Fitness. Being a stay-at-home mom and juggling the demands of a busy household, it seemed like I was taking care of everyone but myself – It was time to make a change. For the past three months I have been setting goals and reaching them – attending the morning cardio session and my small group sessions and along with that, the help of the nutritional counselling and the accountability sessions, the weight and inches have been steadily coming off. I’m feeling great and making a conscious effort to make myself a priority. Exercise and nutrition is now an important part of my daily life. I still have a long way to go but I am excited for the journey. The amazing support team I have in place with my family and friends and with the expert guidance of the coaches at Ascend Fitness have made it a lot of fun and the results are rewarding. I keep asking myself what took me so long to join???
“Two years ago Walt and I made an intentional lifetime commitment to get healthy."
We started with Gordon 2x per week and now attend boot camp 3 mornings a week. (5:30-6:30am). We keep each other motivated and realize the key to long-lasting success is to develop routines and healthy habits. We feel Ascend Fitness is more than just a gym. The trainers are friends, respectful, and professional. We rely on our coaches’ expertise and knowledge to help us improve our physical health. Getting through each session has built confidence and self-esteem which is good for our body and mind. We love the family feeling and working out with others. It’s also encouraging to see our friends and 2 daughters who keep us accountable for that 5:30am class. The programs at Ascend Fitness promote a healthy lifestyle that not only emphasises physical health, but also encourages us to get stronger emotionally and relationally. I recently attended the Women’s Health Summit and appreciated the input from speakers that emphasized nutrition, wealth and overall wellness. Our greatest motivation to stay healthy is to continue with our exercise routine which has given us increased energy for living an active life. We enjoy entertaining in our backyard as well as spending time in sunny Palm Springs where we continue with our exercise routine by hiking, biking and walking. As parents and grandparents (9 grandchildren) we are striving to be genuine examples of how making a commitment to eating well and exercising regularly can accomplish wonderful results. Thank you Ascend Fitness!” Congratulations Walt & Lorraine !!!
"Being stronger has enhanced my other sports and activities -even dance"
“I like the concept of the small group -very nurturing environment. And bootcamps are a hoot – so much fun. Actually, I find the small group sessions a lot of fun as well. I was pleasantly surprised to find I quite enjoyed it. Came to REALLY like the small group. It is a pleasure to attend Ascend. Being stronger has enhanced my other sports and activities -even dance and I have upper body definition that I wasn’t even looking for – inches have disappeared. I had set, and met, a modest goal of jogging/running on treadmill before and after small group. Three km or 25/30 minutes, whichever came first. Plus it feels good to be running again and it is nice to be physically strong with real inroads into curbing the sugar habits and portion control just seems to follow naturally. Ascend is definitely not a one size fits all establishment and I appreciate the individual approach and it is gratifying to have trainers keep track of and gradually increase resistance.”
" I have noticed a significant improvement in my pedaling power and hill climbs, and the best part is that my team mates are noticing it as well! "
I have really enjoyed the bootcamp sessions at Ascend Fitness. Committing myself to up to twice a week for about 45 minutes has fit so well with my hectic work schedule. The sessions have consisted of the right mix of strength training and cardio workouts. The trainers, Kayla and Spenser, are really good at balancing encouragement with challenging me to push harder.
After about four months in the bootcamp program at Ascend, my average cycling pace has increased from about 23km/hour to 28km/hr and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my cardio endurance and strength. Specifically, as I ride with my cycling team, I have noticed a significant improvement in my pedaling power and hill climbs, and the best part is that my team mates are noticing it as well!
Losing 11 pounds has been an extra bonus for me because that was totally unexpected. I can honestly say that I feel fitter than I’ve felt in a long time, and I never hesitate to let people know that i owe this to the bootcamp program. Thank you, Ascend!
"Support, enthusiasm, confidence, laughter & wonderful friendships are the qualities that I see every time I go to Ascend."
I joined Ascend Fitness in June 2014 to initially manage work & lifestyle stress as well as improving my overall running endurance.
I have been running for approx. 4 yrs. I started with a couch to 5k program as a goal from a friend.
I had completed various 5k’s and 10 k’s. I signed up to complete my first ½ marathon last June in Banff.
While I was training for Banff I was diagnosed with early stages of shingles. I had to cease my training and cancel my registration in the ½ marathon. This was very disheartening for me. My family Dr. and I attributed it to stress. So I started looking for ways besides just my running to get healthy, connect with people and learn to eat better.
I heard about Ascend from various people and I researched it online. I read some of the success stories and checked out the website. I was curious and a bit skeptical at first.
I sent an email to inquire more and had my first consult with Gord. I decided to try it for 3 months. I met with Tanja shortly after and set some goals.
The 3 goals I set were:
1: to lose 20lbs
2: to do a 10k in less than 1:10
3: to do a 5K in less than 30 mins.
I still had my ambition to complete a ½ marathon as well. I signed up initially with small group training and have since moved to personal training (but miss the posse.)
These were all fitness goals. I have achieved all of these goals in the last year. I ran my first ½ marathon in September 2014 and I have ran 4 more since. I have been challenged and motivated to set some new goals. Rock n roll Vancouver, Tough Mudder & a 30K road race are some lofty goals for the future.
Something I have learned that I cannot measure is the valuable relationships I have gained. Support, enthusiasm, confidence, laughter & wonderful friendships are the qualities that I see every time I go to Ascend. We can all have goals, but we need the support of great people to achieve them, a team that is working with you.
Ascend Fitness has given me more confidence than I ever had, new challenges, success & motivation to get up at 6am! Fitness and a healthy lifestyle is not just about work, it is fun too.
I am grateful to everyone in my personal life & professional life who have supported me. My family who have stood by, thinking I was losing it by going to the gym at 6am. They have been my traveling buddies, official photographers AND BEST FANS.
My friends who I have raced with and encouraged me to start in the beginning. The tues/thurs small group girls. Thank you for your friendship.
To everyone else at Ascend fitness you are amazing. You have given support, feedback, coaching and so much more. You have exceeded my expectations.
Thank you to Spencer for always giving me a new challenge with no limitations on where I can go. You are a professional, motivational and a supportive trainer.
I always said I never had time…too busy…I can’t do it.
What do you really want from life? Make time, I work shifts/ weekends and nights. I had to make the time. I do not have a day of regret for making the time. Look after YOURSELF no one else can.
It has been 2009 since I have been able to be this low.
My story is simple I have lost seven pounds at each of two weigh ins. My goal is to be below 200 lbs which still, I have 23 lbs to go. More importantly I struggle with my diet, “an open bag of candy is an empty bag of candy” I’m an addict, a junky, my drug of choice is sugar. I have been a type 2 diabetic for a lot of years and need to fix that. My sugar levels in a A1C test has been 11 to 15 for to many years. I have been following my Ascend Program for two months now and this test is a number 6, my new favourite number. It has been 2009 since I have been able to be this low. My wife Sandy, my family doctor Mark Mackenzie and the staff of Ascend Fitness make a great team. I believe I can finally win this battle, slow and steady forward. Thank you all.
"Since starting the Take Down Challenge in May I have lost 20 pounds but more importantly than that, I've learned how to take care of myself better and to take the time to take care of myself. "
Everyone at Ascend is amazing – from the front team to all of the trainers, everyone is professional and so encouraging. Everyone works together to encourage you to improve and meet your goals. The selection of programs is great – when signing up there were options for the level of commitment you wanted to make and the time that you were able to dedicate to it. The coaching that comes with the small groups program is amazing. No matter who the coach is, you know you are going to be encouraged and pushed to the next level. I need the accountability that the coaching program offers as it’s noticed if you aren’t there as it’s a personal relationship.
After the Take Down Challenge, I joined Ascend for the accountability piece but I stay for the encouragement and positive reinforcement that is offered. I also love that there isn’t a push to work out more and be thinner and stronger, but it’s the encouragement to be a better you.
Since starting the Take Down Challenge in May I have lost 20 pounds but more importantly than that, I’ve learned how to take care of myself better and to take the time to take care of myself. Between a crazy work schedule, school, and taking the time to work out, meal planning and prep has been the best thing for me – if you plan for it, it will happen! Otherwise you’re relying on finding something to eat and it’s unlikely to be the healthiest choice. It’s also reinforced that it isn’t about the scale but also inches and even more importantly, how you feel.
My endurance has increased since starting at Ascend and my strength has increased a lot. I find many moves in pole class so much easier especially those that are strength based – being lighter and stronger makes things more fluid and easier.
I would encourage anyone to join Ascend – it’s not about losing weight, it’s about seeing yourself better and making progress that isn’t about the scale. The scale doesn’t define you!
The quality of Ascend Fitness’ organization and team is excellent.
I love the coaching programs and I love the small group. The hands on coaching is absolutely for me.
I first joined Ascend Fitness because my doctor recommended Tanja Shaw to help strengthen joints. He wasn’t sure where she was working so I found her here. And it all worked out perfectly for me.
My specific results I’ve gotten since starting with Ascend Fitness is losing weight and inches (12 pounds, 9 overall inches) and my general results I have experienced since starting with Ascend Fitness is
– strengthened joints
– great success with the nutrition program
– more energy
– less digestive issues
I’d just like to thank everyone here for helping me obtain my goals and being so encouraging.
